Why personal trainers win on Google Ads

Google captures the moment someone needs a personal trainer now.

SEO is slow to build. Directories bring volume but the wrong fit. Facebook ads catch people who weren’t actively looking. Google Ads put you in front of homeowners and landlords the second they type “personal trainer near me” into their phone. That’s why it works for PTs who solve urgent problems.

High intent

“Personal trainer near me” searches convert hard

Someone deciding to start training today rarely shops more than three names. They click the first credible local result and book a free consultation call. UK average conversion rate for “personal trainer near me” searches is solid (8-10%+), well above the average across fitness.

Local geo

Postcode level targeting cuts the wasted spend

Most personal trainers work a 15 25 mile radius. Google Ads lets us bid only inside that radius, exclude postcodes you don’t serve, and weight bids higher in your most profitable patches. No wasted clicks from someone 80 miles away.

Service split

Free Consultations, personal trainings and transformations each get their own campaign

A landlord searching “Free Consultation Birmingham” wants a different message and price than a homeowner searching “personal training”. I build a campaign for each so the ad, the landing page and the bid all match the search intent.

Call tracking

Every call is tracked back to the keyword that booked it

No call tracking means no clue what’s working. I hook up call tracking on every campaign so you know which keywords pay back, which ones to kill, and which ones to scale.

Negatives

A real negative keyword list keeps tyre kickers out

“personal trainer courses”, “PT salary”, “free workout plan”, “DIY”, “home workout”, these search terms drain budgets daily. I block them on day one and keep the negatives list updated every month so your spend only buys real PT enquiries.

Ad scheduling

Bids ramp up at the times consultations actually get booked

Most PT enquiries come between 6am and 9am, plus a second spike at 5 7pm. I schedule bid uplift in those windows and dial back when nobody’s calling. Your budget gets spent when it earns the most.

Personal Trainer campaigns I run

Built around the leads that actually pay.

No generic “Licensed Personal Trainer, Call Now” garbage. Each service gets its own ad copy, landing message and bid strategy so the right enquiry lands in your inbox, not the wrong one.

How I work

A simple 4 step process. No 90 day onboarding waffle.

01

Free audit

If you’re already running ads, I dig through the account and write you a plain English audit of what’s broken and what to fix first. If you’re new, I map a clean structure round your services and area.

02

Build & launch

Service split campaigns, geo and schedule dialled in, conversion and call tracking wired up, negative keywords seeded, ad copy written by a human. Live within 7 to 10 days of go ahead.

03

Optimise weekly

Search terms reviewed, negatives added, bids tweaked, ad copy tested, landing pages improved. Monthly update on what changed and what’s coming next.

04

Scale

Once cost per call is sub-£25 consistently, I widen the radius, layer on remarketing, add new services and grow the budget without breaking what’s working.

Google Ads vs Instagram & Facebook Ads

Should you run Google Ads, Instagram & Facebook Ads, or both?

Short answer: most working personal trainers want both. Here’s how they actually differ and which one books consultations first.

Google Ads (search)

High intent. Buys ready to book.

Pay per click. You’re showing up when someone types “personal trainer near me”, “post-natal PT”, or “PT for marathon training”. They’re already searching for what you sell. Best when you want predictable consultation bookings, you’ve got specific services to push (12 week transformations, post-natal, online coaching), or your landing page is set up to convert.

Instagram & Facebook Ads

Brand building. Warming up cold audiences.

Pay per impression or engagement. People scroll past, you build familiarity over time. Best for showing client transformations, building your personal brand and feeding people into a free guide, a webinar or a 6 week challenge. Slower to book consultations, but cheaper per impression and better at filling your funnel long term.

The honest answer

Start with Google Ads if you need clients now.

Google Ads books consultations in week one or two. Instagram and Facebook are better at building a brand that compounds over 6-12 months but you’ll be waiting longer for revenue. If you’re a brand new PT or moving studios, start with Google. Add Facebook and Instagram once you’ve got a steady flow of consultations and want to scale.

Frequently asked

Personal Trainer Google Ads, answered straight.

Real questions from real personal trainers running their own business.

How much should a personal trainer spend on Google Ads in the UK?

Most solo PTs do well on £200 to £800 a month in ad spend. That’s enough to win in your town or service area at a sensible cost per consultation. If you run a small PT studio with 2-3 trainers, £600 to £1,500 a month is more realistic. I’ll size the budget to your client capacity, your area and your average client value, not pull a number out of thin air.

What’s a realistic cost per booked consultation?

Once a campaign is properly set up, £15 to £40 per booked consultation is a fair benchmark for UK PTs. Online coaching enquiries can come in cheaper. Niche services like post-natal PT or sport-specific coaching often cost more per click but convert at a higher value. I track every lead back to the keyword that produced it so you know exactly where your money is working.

Do I need REPs or CIMSPA certification to run Google Ads?

Google doesn’t require it but your prospects look for it. I make sure your REPs Level 3, CIMSPA membership, or any specialist qualification (post-natal, GP referral, strength and conditioning) is front and centre in your ad copy and on your landing page. It’s one of the cheapest ways to lift conversion rate without spending more on clicks.

Do I need public liability insurance to run ads for my PT business?

Yes, and I’ll mention it in your ads where space allows. Trust signals like “£6m public liability cover” or “fully insured” sit alongside CIMSPA and REPs and help the right people pick up the phone. If you don’t have cover yet, get it before I launch, it’s £8-£15 a month and non-negotiable for any paid traffic strategy.

I rent space at a gym, I don’t own one. Can Google Ads still work?

Yes, this is the most common setup I work with. I target the area you actually train in, your home town or commuter belt, not the gym brand. Your landing page focuses on you, your results and your sessions, not the building. PTs who rent space at a chain gym can run Google Ads against the gym’s own in-house trainers and win, because you sell something different.

How does Google Ads work if I train people in their homes or in parks?

Brilliantly, actually. Mobile PTs have a huge advantage in Google Ads because you can serve a wider radius without overheads. I build campaigns around “personal trainer in [town]”, “mobile personal trainer” and “home workout sessions” keywords. The landing page shows the radius you cover and any travel costs upfront so you don’t waste clicks on people miles outside your area.

I do mostly online coaching. Will Google Ads work for that?

Yes, but the playbook is different. Online coaching campaigns target by keyword and interest rather than postcode, and the landing page does more heavy lifting because there’s no in-person hook. Expect higher CPCs (you’re competing nationally) but also higher client lifetime value. Block bookings and 12 week transformation programmes usually outsell month-to-month online plans, so I lean into those offers.

Do I need a niche or can I market myself as a general PT?

You can run ads as a general PT, but a clear niche almost always lowers your cost per lead. “Post-natal PT in Leeds” beats “personal trainer in Leeds” every time because the search has higher intent and less competition. Pick one niche you’re qualified for, build a dedicated landing page for it, and run a separate campaign. Generalist ads can still run alongside but the niche pulls the cheaper leads.

How long until I see results?

Real consultation bookings usually start in week one or two. The first 30 days are about getting data, the next 30 about cutting what’s not working, the next 30 about scaling what is. By day 90 the account should be predictable. That’s why my promise is 90 days, not 30.

Can you take over my existing Google Ads account?

Yes. I audit what’s there first (free, reply within 24 hours, full audit within 24 hours), tell you what’s wasting money and what’s working, then I agree a plan. You keep ownership of the account always. If I ever part ways, the account, history and conversion data stay with you. No agency lock-in.

Do you handle the calls and form leads?

No, I manage Google Ads, not your inbox. But I’ll set up call tracking, form tracking and a clear, fast landing page so leads come through clean and ready for you to follow up. I can also wire up automated SMS or email replies so leads don’t go cold while you’re mid-session with a client.

Can you target a specific area or radius?

Yes. I target by postcode, radius, town or any combination. I can also exclude areas you don’t want leads from (too far to travel, postcodes that don’t convert, whatever). Geo targeting is one of the biggest levers in PT campaigns and most agencies do it badly.

What if my campaign isn’t profitable?

That’s what the 90 day promise is for. If you’re not measurably better off after 90 days I’ll work the next month for free until you are. If I hit a point where Google Ads genuinely isn’t right for your business, I’ll tell you straight and stop billing. I’d rather lose a client than waste their money.

Do I need a website to run Google Ads?

You need somewhere people land after they click, but it doesn’t have to be a 30 page website. A single fast-loading landing page with your photo, qualifications, sessions on offer, pricing and a booking link is enough to start. I can recommend builders and templates that work for PTs.

Will Google Ads work for a brand new PT with no reviews?

Yes. Google Ads doesn’t lean on your Google review count the way third party directories do. As long as your landing page looks credible (clear pricing, qualifications, photo, public liability badge, CIMSPA or REPs membership) you can compete from day one. Reviews come quickly once you’re running consultations.
